At the Border
Know exactly what to expect at customs and immigration. Being prepared prevents delays and avoids costly mistakes.
Customs Declaration
- Declare cash exceeding RMB 20,000 or foreign equivalent of USD 5,000
- Check restricted items: certain medications, tobacco limits, electronics
- Use the green channel (nothing to declare) or red channel accordingly
- Keep receipts for high-value electronics bought abroad
Transit Visa Eligibility
- Check if your nationality qualifies for 144-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit
- Confirm your transit city is on the approved list (Shanghai, Beijing, etc.)
- Ensure your onward ticket destination is a qualifying third country
- Register at the designated transit counter before leaving the port area
Fingerprinting & Immigration
- All foreigners aged 14–70 must provide fingerprints at the border
- Fill out the Arrival Card accurately — data must match your visa application
- Have your hotel address or host contact ready for the immigration officer
- Your passport will be stamped with an authorized length of stay — check it

First 72 Hours
The first three days are critical. Complete these legal obligations and financial setups immediately to avoid penalties.
Police Registration
- Register at the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) within 24 hours of arrival
- Hotel guests are automatically registered — verify at check-in
- Airbnb / private accommodation: host must file on your behalf
- Keep the registration slip — you may need it for banking and SIM
Alipay & WeChat Pay Setup
- Link a foreign Visa/Mastercard to Alipay International (up to CNY 50,000/year)
- Enable WeChat Pay with a foreign card for small transactions
- Accept payment QR code requests — essential for markets and small vendors
- Test a small transaction to confirm everything works before you need it
Bank Account Opening
- Choose a bank: Bank of China and ICBC are most foreigner-friendly
- Bring passport, entry stamp, and police registration slip
- A local SIM card is usually required to receive the bank OTP
- UnionPay debit card enables full access to the local payment ecosystem

Longer Stay & Business
Staying beyond 90 days or doing business in China requires formal permits. Plan ahead — processing can take weeks.
Residence Permit
- Apply at your local PSB Entry-Exit Administration within 30 days of visa expiry
- Required: work permit (if employed), housing contract, health check certificate
- Z-visa holders must convert to a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival
- Permits are issued for 1–5 years and can be renewed in-country
Housing & Registration
- Sign a formal lease — required for residence permit and bank account
- Landlord must register the rental with local authorities within 10 days
- Update your police registration whenever you change address
- Expat compounds often have on-site administrative support — ask before signing
Business & Work Permits
- Work Permit (外国人工作许可证) must be secured before the Z-visa is issued
- Your employer submits applications through the Ministry of Human Resources
- Freelancers and consultants: consider the M-visa for short business trips
- WFOE/JV entity setup requires a local legal representative and capital deposit
